Elizabeth M. Soden, known as Betsy to her friends and colleagues, received her M.A. in Linguistics at the University of Michigan and taught at the English Language Institute as a Lecturer until her retirement in 1989.  At the ELI, she was not only a well-respected teacher and beloved colleague but also served as Reading Coordinator and Student Advisor.  After her retirement, she volunteered at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital library and committed much of her time and energy in advocacy work on behalf of the parents of and children suffering from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).  Betsy and her husband Vern formed and led the FASD support group in Washtenaw and were on the Michigan-statewide FASD Task force.  Her commitment and leadership will be missed by all who knew her.
