Resources for International Scholars

The ELI offers courses that enable international scholars, researchers, faculty, staff and postdocs to increase their confidence using English and thus maximize their professional contributions during their time at the University of Michigan and beyond. These courses provide instruction in strategies for academic writing and for speaking in both formal and informal settings.

In Fall 2020, IS 501: Introduction to Communications in Academia is offered online. This course focuses on the academic skills that scholars, researchers, faculty, and other academic professionals in all disciplines need to succeed in the academic community. Key course components include research writing; poster and conference presentations; leading and participating in formal discussions; and informal interactions in the extended academic community.  Extensive individualized instructor feedback will help participants at all levels of English proficiency improve their accuracy, fluency, and delivery style in both professional and social settings.

IS 501:  Introduction to Communications in Academia (Fall and Spring terms)

A course for international scholars, researchers, faculty, staff, and postdocs. Offered in the Fall and Spring terms.

NOTE: IS 501 will be offered ONLINE in Fall 2020.

All participants receive extensive individualized instructor feedback.

There is a course fee for participation. Participants are encouraged to seek partial or full funding for the course fee from their respective department or sponsor.

IS 502:  Academic Communications Seminar (Winter term)

A 10-session course for international scholars, researchers, faculty, staff, and postdocs. Offered in the Winter term.

This course provides scholars, researchers, faculty and other academic professionals with communication strategies for effective academic speaking and writing. Course topics include:

  1. Public speaking and presenting
  2. Participating in academic discussion
  3. Style and organization in research writing
  4. Academic vocabulary development
  5. Pronunciation

All participants receive extensive individualized instructor feedback.

There is a course fee for participation. Participants are encouraged to seek partial or full funding for the course fee from their respective department or sponsor.
