Summer EAP Goes to Detroit! 

On Friday, July 13, international U-M graduate students in ELI’s Summer EAP program embarked on a daylong trip to Detroit to explore the city and learn about some of its vibrant cultural heritage. During their visit, they had the opportunity to explore Detroit’s African American heritage at the renowned Charles Wright Museum of African American History. The students were deeply moved by the museum's extensive exhibits and found the experience “meaningful” and “enriching.”Continuing their historical exploration, the students enjoyed the Historical Tour of the David Whitney mansion learning the stories about the founders of Detroit's most iconic former residence and about its lingering ghosts. They then visited the historic Cathedral Church of St. Paul, admiring its stained glass-work and the Gothic architectural elements and learning about its significance in the community over the years. They were even treated to a short and impressive organ concert played just for the group!Later in the afternoon, the students explored the bustling downtown area, including the iconic Guardian Building, and then hopped on the People Mover for the panoramic views of the city's famous landmarks, ending up with a photo op in front of the Spirit of Detroit monument. Students reported not only appreciating Detroit's rich history and cultural diversity but learning about the things they can further explore in the city on their own.
