Welcome to ELI
The English Language Institute (ELI) provides a full range of English for Academic Purposes courses and other types of language and academic support for international undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, researchers, staff, and post-docs at the University of Michigan. We also offer language and pedagogy courses for current and prospective international GSIs and ESL/EFL teacher preparation courses for graduates and undergraduates interested in teaching English in local communities or abroad.
The ELI offers several Language Clinics which provide international graduate students, GSIs, scholars, faculty, and staff with one-on-one language and academic support. Clinics are staffed by ELI lecturers or by GSIs working under close supervision of experienced faculty.
Resources for International Scholars, Researchers, Faculty, Staff, and Post-Docs
The ELI offers non-credit courses and other resources to help international Scholars, Researchers, Faculty, Staff and Post-Docs increase their confidence using English and thus maximize their professional contributions during their stay at the University of Michigan and beyond.
Undergraduate Speaking and Writing Studios
The ELI now offers in-person speaking and writing help for international undergraduate students in the Speaking and Writing Studios. Currently registered undergraduate students in any U-M school or college may attend up to four Studio appointments per term.
