We encourage students to develop a program of study in accordance with their interests and career plans. We provide curriculum guides for the following areas of specialization:

• Communication and Thought
• Hispanic Communities
• Power, Politics, and Cultural Production
• Race and Gender

The Curriculum Guides on-line provide clusters of recommended courses for each area of specialization. No specific courses are required, nor is it necessary to declare an area of specialization; but we encourage students to consult with a major adviser in developing a program of study and in selecting courses each semester.

Note that we offer a number of topics courses that in any given semester may focus on your area of interest. Consult the LSA Course Guide each term for topics and descriptions, particularly under the following general courses:

Also note that majors may take one approved cognate course, taught in English in another department but pertaining to Hispanic studies. Consult the list of approved cognates on the RLL website, many of which will pertain to these areas of specialization.
