A Spanish cognate course is a course in which a majority of the content focuses on Hispanic studies, but which does not give instruction primarily in Spanish.
- Cognate credit is only allowed for the major. Students enrolled in the minor cannot use cognate credit.
- Spanish majors are allowed to receive a maximum of three credits toward the major for one cognate course.
- Spanish cognate courses will not automatically appear in your degree audit. Please meet with a Spanish advisor or email rll.mailbox@umich.edu to have a cognate course applied to your Spanish major requirements
- Spanish cognate courses count toward the Spanish major at either the 279-399 or 400 level. The level of each approved cognate course is indicated on the list below.
- If you believe that a course meets the guidelines to count as a Spanish cognate but does not appear on this list, please complete the RLL Spanish Cognate Request Form (pdf), obtain a copy of the syllabus for the class, and return the completed proposal form to rll.mailbox@umich.edu. The form will then be submitted to the appropriate committee for final approval.

EDUC 390/ELI 390/LING 386/RCSSCI 390 Community Service Learning in ESL Teaching Contexts (Not eligible for cognate credit effective Winter 2020)
ITALIAN 410 Italian for Spanish Speakers – counts as a 400-level elective toward the Spanish major or minor. Students may count only one of ITALIAN 410 or PORT 280 (formerly PORT 415) toward the Spanish major or minor requirements.
PORTUG 280 Portuguese for Speakers of Romance Languages - counts as a 279-399-level course toward the Spanish major or minor (elective). Students may count only one of ITALIAN 410 or PORTUG 280 toward the Spanish major or minor requirements.
ROMLANG 253/SPANISH 373 The Mediterranean – only when taken as a meets-together with SPANISH 373, it counts as a 279-399-level elective for Spanish majors or minors who complete their work in Spanish. Spanish majors who complete their work in English may receive 279-399-level cognate credit.
