Giving Opportunities

Since its founding in 1941, ELI has provided English language instruction based on the most up-to-date research on language, second language acquisition theory, and second-language pedagogy. Today, ELI is at the forefront of the emerging field of graduate communication, with creative courses supporting students and scholars across disciplines. Our new undergraduate academic English courses prepare U-M students to succeed in their academic work and prepare for their professional lives. Our community-engaged TESOL teacher training courses provide liberal arts students with practical life skills. With our social and cultural programming, we are forging new connections that cross the domestic/international and graduate/undergraduate divides. ELI plays a key role in creating a more globalized campus environment that enlivens and enriches the experience of the entire Michigan community.

Your Gifts at Work

"The ELI's academic English for international scholars improved my writing and presenting skills. It was also a great opportunity to connect with other scholars and share knowledge."

–Marco Cavalazzi, Visiting Scholar, LSA Classical Studies & Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

ELI International Scholars Fund

Each year, academic departments, programs, and labs of the University of Michigan invite top scholars from universities around the world to join our campus community as visiting scholars. While brilliant high-achievers in their disciplines, these scholars come to Michigan with diverse levels of English skills. ELI offers courses that enable these scholars to maximize their professional contributions during their stay at the University, and beyond. Your gift makes these courses accessible to scholars from around the world, regardless of their financial means, and contributes to a more globalized U-M community.
