It is perhaps fitting that as the University of Michigan begins to celebrate its bicentennial that an economic historian takes over as department chair. The celebration reminds us of all that we value about U-M. I look forward to a productive and exciting term ahead.

In the past year, the department had numerous accomplishments in which we can take pride. We had notable research successes, many of which were supported by the Michigan Institute for Teaching and Research in Economics (MITRE).

Our doctoral students were highly successful in securing jobs using their professional training. All (100 percent) of our doctoral students placed, and the quality of placements was outstanding. We are very proud!

We are pleased to launch the Economics Alumni Relationship Network (EARN) for our undergraduates. EARN creates engaging relationships between U-M Economics alumni and undergraduates, to create a strong professional network, and to engage one-on-one for valuable mentoring and personalized career advice. EARN is just one example of how U-M Economics is forging a strong vibrant community of economists. We are focused on engagement with, and success for, our students and alumni at every level!

We are happy to welcome a new faculty member, Anne-Katrin Roesler. (You can read about her accomplishments here). We are hopeful that all of our recent recruits have long and productive careers at U-M.

Going forward, we have a number of important, promising initiatives.

We are embarking in active steps towards increasing diversity, equity and inclusion among the undergraduate students in our classrooms, our economics majors, MAE students, doctoral students, and our faculty.

Thanks to MITRE and the exceptional support provided by our alumni and friends, the department offers great opportunities for our students to conduct innovative research.

In association with RSQE, we are seeking to continue and deepen the department’s community engagement by providing economic data and insights to help government and institutions set policies to enhance state and local economic development.

We look forward to an active and successful recruiting season for faculty, doctoral and MAE students.
