Social Dynamics and Decision-Making in the Healthcare Context
Through my academic and professional pursuits as a pre-medical student, I have grown deeply interested in the psychology of human interactions, as well as how individuals and organizations conceptualize decision-making in the context of both internal and external influences. I plan on taking courses which explore how individuals, organizations, and social systems behave with respect to healthcare in order to promote equitable patient experiences, organize health providers and organizations to pursue patient-centered care, and work to foster transparent partnerships between hospitals and private health-related institutions.
Additionally, I am interested in exploring the intersection between sociology, developmental psychology, and medicine because I believe in securing equal access to healthcare resources for patients, regardless of socioeconomic, racial, ethnic or gender identity. Pursuing courses which focus on the cultural influences on perception and decision-making, medicalization and healthcare market dynamics, and how corporate practices lead to inequality will give me a greater understanding for how best to employ holistic approaches in promoting health equity and justice. I am also eager to better understand culturally-sensitive and collaborative strategies which effectively address growing disparities between specific communities’ decreasing health outcomes and, paradoxically, America’s increasing health spending, because I believe it is important to ensure that marginalized communities are empowered to let their voices be heard. As a student in the humanities, I strive to continue asking questions on the way we make decisions and how we translate our choices to shape the healthcare experiences of others.
