Transfer Credit

To have a class evaluated (or re-evaluated):

  • First, visit the Department's Transfer Credit Website and search for the institution.  This database is more user friendly than the Admissions Transfer Credit Database, which you may link to below.
  • Select the correct institutional code from the resulting drop-down menu. If your course is not on the resulting list, click the "New Course Request" link below the list, and follow the instructions there. For courses with expired evaluations or other re-evaluation requests, select "Expand" next to the appropriate course and then click "Log in" under "For more request options."
  • If you have questions about this process, please email math-transfer-credit@umich.edu.  Please note you must use the Department's Transfer Credit Website to submit your evaluation.  We will only accept requests submitted via the online system.
  • Course evaluation can take up to an entire term to have your course evaluated; please submit your materials as early as possible.

General Math Transfer Credit Policies

  • Online courses are accepted for transfer so long as they are deemed equivalent by the Transfer Credit Committee.
  • Math course evaluations expire at the date listed on the online transfer credit database, students may take and complete approved courses up to the expiration date (i.e., a course that expires 9/18/19 would be valid for 2019 summer semesters, but not the 2019 fall semester).
  • Transfer credit for Math 217 (Linear Algebra) is rarely, if ever, approved. Students planning to major in mathematics should plan to take Math 217 in-residence at U(M).
  • All mathematics transfer credits follow the general College of LSA transfer credit guidelines, please review them here. Students are responsible for knowing and abiding by these policies.
  • The Mathematics Department accepts transfer credit for any math course which meets U(M) Mathematics prerequisite & major requirements.
  • Math 105 is our "preparation for Calculus" course.  Courses preceding Math 105 or that may be prerequisites to Math 105 will not be granted transfer credit.
  • Transfer credits may be applied to majors and minors in accordance with the rules of the student's U(M) college.
