We will use some combinatorial and geometric ideas to discuss different ways to turn ideals into "shapes". We will then see how in each case, computing the volume of the "shape" tells us something about the original ideal. The "shapes" we will discuss are Young diagrams, Newton polyhedra, and (time permitting) Newton-Okounkov bodies.
