Notions from homotopy theory can be used not only in the category of topological spaces, but also in the settings of other categories like simplicial sets or chain complexes of R-modules. The concept of a model category axiomatizes the assumptions needed to study "homotopy theory" in various categories. In this talk I will give a brief introduction to model categories and discuss applications (time permitting). Speaker(s): Michael Mueller (University of Michigan)
