Student Representation Theory Seminar

Representations of affine Lie algebras
Tuesday, March 13, 2018
3:00-4:00 PM
1866 East Hall Map
This talk will focus on affine sl_n, an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra whose root system is one dimension larger than that of sl_n. After describing the structure of this Lie algebra, we will construct its "basic representation," which can be thought of as the affine analogue of the wedge powers of the standard n-dimensional representation of sl_n. We will see that the basis of this representation is naturally indexed by partitions with no parts of multiplicity greater than or equal to n, and the structure of the representation is governed by the combinatorics of these partitions.
