Student Combinatorics Seminar Seminar

Tropical grassmannians, tropical linear spaces, and valuated matroids
Monday, February 12, 2018
4:00-5:00 PM

Just as the grassmannian parametrizes m-dimensional subspaces of a given vector space, the tropical grassmannian parametrizes analogous tropical objects. In the case m = 2, the tropical grassmannian has an especially nice interpretation as parametrizing phylogenetic trees. When m = 3 or more, the story is more complicated and is connected to the theory of valuated matroids, i.e. matroids coming from fields with valuation.
