All first-year LSWA students are required to:
- Take LSWA 125 (Introduction to College Writing) in fall term
- This also fulfills the First Year Writing Requirement for LSA.
- ENGLISH 125 does not substitute for this LSWA course.
- If you are an Honors or Engineering student, please contact LSWA staff during registration at LSWA@umich.edu.
- This also fulfills the First Year Writing Requirement for LSA.
- Take at least one other LSWA course during winter term. These courses may include:
- LSWA 140 (Studio Art, fulfills LSA Creative Expression)
- LSWA 130 (Writing and the Arts I, fulfills LSA Creative Expression)
- LSWA 230 (Writing and the Arts II, fulfills LSA Creative Expression, satisfies a prerequisite for the Minor in Writing)
- LSWA 228 (What Is Writing, fulfills LSA Humanities)
- Participate in an LSWA club
- Clubs are run by student-leaders and meet 4 times per month
- Past writing/arts clubs have included: Arts and Literary Journal; Creative Writing; Dance; Film; Music; Photography; Poetry; Community Service; Art; Fashion; Graphic novel; Speaking and Performance
- Attend three all-community events each semester
- Submit three favorite pieces of writing, photography, or art to be considered for the Arts and Literary Journal
Community Participation
To encourage community participation, students earn points towards a portion of course grades for attending events and club meetings, and for submitting their favorite work in fall semester.
Please note: Program requirements are mandatory. Students must meet course requirements to remain in the program and in the residence hall.
