Q&A with filmmaker Ccil Michel following screening
The Phantoms of Lovanium documents a painting performance on the campus of the University of Kinshasa by Congolese artist Sapin Makengele. The film also captures the reactions of various onlookers as they gather to observe Makengele painting a work about a student massacre in Kinshasa in 1969.
Makengele will be present on campus the following week to produce a new painting in a public performance at the Institute for the Humanities and the University of Michigan Museum of Art, from Monday 23 to February 27.
