Southeast Asian Studies

Southeast Asia is a place of extraordinary diversity, representing almost all of the world’s religious traditions (Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and more). Part maritime and part mainland, the region comprises 11 countries and includes hundreds of languages. Historically, the region has been the home of powerful civilizations and successive waves of colonial power. At present, it includes some of the world’s most vibrant metropolitan regions and biodiverse areas. ALC is one of the few departments in the country that offers Southeast Asian languages–Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Filipino–and our course offerings are designed to support and complement language learning. But they also welcome the curious student with no prior knowledge of the region.
