Prospective Students

WISE RP is more than just a learning community! We are a tight-knit group of 1st and 2nd year students excited to grow and learn together as emerging STEM leaders. There is so much to do in the WISE RP community! Explore our prospective students page to learn about the program and all the ways you can engage co-curricularly and academically as a community member.

Who We Are

The Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program (WISE RP) is an academically supportive living learning community for students, particularly gender-minoritized students, who are interested in academic majors and careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and/or the pre-health fields. WISE RP students live together in Mosher-Jordan Residence Hall and have an abundance of academic and social opportunities available to them.

The WISE RP serves as a catalyst for transformation! Since 1993 its charge has been, and continues to be, a space that affirms and celebrates differences and empowers change agents. The WISE RP seeks to ensure community members leave their experience with increased self-efficacy, enhanced leadership skills, and a greater sense of how they hope to make an impact on their respective fields of study.

Our mission and tenets undergird our curricular and co-curricular initiatives. We strongly encourage applicants to familiarize themselves with this background.

Program Benefits

Specialized Semester Courses

Credit-bearing courses guided by WISE RP's tenets to orient students to intellectual life at the University of Michigan while exploring the challenges and opportunities gender-minoritized individuals encounter in STEM fields.

Academic & Professional Development

Through a range of resources and opportunities, such as Affinity Spaces, supportive study groups, and Summer Research Scholarships, WISE RP students are provided with collaborative learning environments to support their academic and professional success

Mentorship

Each first-year student is paired with a sophomore peer mentor who offers valuable academic and social support during the transition to university life.  Additionally, all community members have the opportunity to cultivate mentorship relationships with upper-class and graduate students, professional staff, faculty, alumni, and industry leaders. These connections foster a support network that encourages personal and professional growth throughout their college journey and beyond.

Community Engagement

Students live together in a supportive learning environment and build community through social, community service, multicultural, and educational activities. Students are provided specialized opportunities for service learning and study abroad with the WISE RP community. WISE RP community members have innumerable opportunities to connect with program alumni through: the annual Alumni Weekend, WISE Nights,  Summer Scholars, industry site visits, and direct mentorship and coaching.
