Henderson Rm, 3rd Fl, Michigan League

This workshop, which is open to the public, invites the members of the Editorial Board of the on-line journal Politica Comun:  A Journal of Thought (General Editor, Gareth Williams; Founding Editors, Benjamín Mayer Foulkes, Alberto Moreiras, Davide Tarizzo) to reflect on the conditions and projection of contemporary thought in relation to the role of Hispanic Studies in the current global academic field.  The conversation will be generated around and oriented by the participants’ pre-circulated papers.

Politica Comun sponsors philological research but is also committed to the advancement of political and historical thought, intellectual history in its broadest sense, visual culture, and technical and scientific reflection.  Since this cannot be carried out without a sustained engagement with contemporary thought Política común promotes sustained reflection of a comparative nature and with a basis in theoretical reflection.  Of particular interest is scholarship that strives to shed light on the deep structures of social and political modernity such as Castilian self-authorization as the heirs of Roman imperial structures, the long history of the territories that joined politically under the name of Spain, its imperial projections in the New World and Asia, the different ways of engaging the task of postcoloniality after 1810 and 1898 (particularly, though not exclusively, via Latin America), and the history of the Hispanic diaspora in North America and Europe in the last two centuries.  Over the last forty years the tradition of critical theory has responded to the changes posed by geopolitical change (globalization, new social movements, shifts at the level of the social, the crisis of political modernity, new wars etc.) by articulating knowledge around three crucial axes: a) subalternity (race, class, gender, culture, the political); b) discourse (from different forms of textuality to new media including visual and digital cultures); c) technology and the cognitive sciences. Politica Comun seeks to explore the cross-fertilization of these three main strands of thinking, taking into consideration the question of the social bond.  As such, Politica Comun traverses the field of Hispanic Studies understood in the broadest sense but does not propose to stop there.
