Program in the Environment (PitE) allows students to take and transfer courses from other institutions to the University of Michigan for prerequisite, major, and minor credit through the approval process described below. Transfer courses must be approved by the Program if they are to count toward any Environment major prerequisites, or major or minor core requirements. The Program does review coursework for potential transfer students to determine how coursework from another institution could be applied to the Environment major or minors.
If you plan to complete prerequisite or core course(s) at another institution, you should see a PitE Academic Advisor and review the UM Transfer Credit Equivalency Guides.
AP and Transfer Credit For PitE Prerequisites and Core Courses
- AP/IB credit in Environmental Science, Microeconomics, and Biology are acceptable to fulfill PitE major prereqs. AP Econ credit will appear as ECON 101X for 2 credits on your transcript, and while this is not considered exactly equivalent to Econ 101 at UM, it is acceptable for the PitE prereq.
- If you are a current or potential transfer student check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved to transfer to U-M. If the class is not listed on the TCE, then it has not previously been evaluated for transfer. Submit the name of the institution and the course syllabus to Program in the Environment at firstname.lastname@example.org for evaluation. If known, please also indicate the specific PitE major or minor requirement for which you are seeking credit.
- An additional step may be required in this process. If the class does not appear on the TCE list, it should be evaluated by the UM credit evaluators. If you are a current UM student, you may submit an evaluation request using the TCE request form.
