Job Search

Environmental Job Search

PitE students pursue a wide array of positions inside and outside of the environmental field. For students interested in pursuing work within the environmental field, review the Explore Environmental Careers tab to identify a career area that aligns with your interests.

Job Search Process & Timeline

Step 1: Brainstorm About Your Future Dream Job

  • Reflect on your dreams for what you want to accomplish in your future or what you want your life to look like in 5-10 years.
  • If you are unsure or if that feels overwhelming, take some time to look through these career exploration questions and consider what you want your life to look like in just the next year.

Step 2: Identify Organizations

  • Browse the Explore Environmental Careers webpage and determine 2-3 areas that interest you.
  • Review the below list of PitE Alumni Job Placements.
  • Research online to find organizations that align with your interests.

Step 3: Develop Your Strategy

  • Recognize that as an entry-level applicant, it's not expected that you secure your dream job right away. Develop a search strategy to enter a field and build toward your dream job.
  • Consider any of the below paths:
    • Internship: Even after you graduate, internships are a great way to gain entry into a well-known organization or company.
    • Adjacent role: When entering a job field, you can pursue roles adjacent to your ideal position in order to gain experience and recognition within an organization.
    • Smaller Organization: Working at smaller organizations can provide opportunities to build a broad skill set because staff often need to work across multiple areas.
    • Volunteer Program: If you are hoping to work in the non-profit or government sector, volunteer programs can be a great way to first access those fields.

Step 4: Outreach

  • Look for PitE and SEAS alumni working at the organizations and reach out to them for an informational interview
  • If no alumni work there, reach out to people working at entry-level positions and set up informational interviews.
  • Keep track of your interactions and connections using a networking tracker

Step 5: Search For Positions

  • Go to SEAS Career Link to search for internship postings. Use the "Industry" filter to search for positions directly related to your interests.
  • If you aren't finding relevant internships on SEAS Career Link, you can:
    • Use other boards
    • Search the websites of organizations or companies that interest you for job postings. If job postings aren't up, reach out to someone with an entry-level position for an informational interview.

Step 6: Apply

  • Develop a spreadsheet where you can track your applications and deadlines.
  • Look through the University Career Center's resources on developing your resume and cover letter
  • Set up a career coaching appointment to review your resume and cover letter.
  • Submit applications.

Step 7: Interview

Step 8: Negotiate

  • If you receive a job offer from an employer, you don't need to accept the offer right away. It is best to thank the employer for the offer and ask them when they need your response.
  • Set up a coaching appointment to develop your negotiation plan.
