Published in 2022, OS Director Elizabeth Popp Berman’s book, Thinking like an Economist: How Efficiency Replaced Equality in U.S. Public Policy, explores the dominating role of economic reasoning in Washington between the 1960s and 1980s. Dubbed as “one of the most important studies of American governance in many years” by the Boston Review, it is no surprise that Berman’s work has also recently been recognized by the American Sociological Association for its contribution to economic and political sociology. At the annual ASA conference in Philadelphia just weeks ago, Berman was awarded the 2023 Viviana Zelizer Best Book in Economic Sociology Award and the 2023 Outstanding Contribution to Political Sociology Award.

Congratulations to OS Director Beth Berman for her outstanding work and well-deserved ASA awards. You can learn more about Elizabeth Popp Berman and her work here.
