The Blumenfeld Scholarship is made possible through a generous donation by Bachelor in General Studies alumnus David Blumenfeld. This scholarship recognizes outstanding students who use the flexibility of the B.G.S. degree structure to craft especially thoughtful and coherent interdisciplinary courses of study.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be officially declared as seeking a Bachelor in General Studies.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Be a sophomore or junior.
  • Have at least one fall or winter semester of in-residence enrollment remaining before graduation (not including the current semester in which you apply).
  • Must apply for & receive need-based support through the UM Office of Financial Aid.

To Apply

Use the Returning Student Scholarship page to apply. Be prepared to upload a PDF version of your resume and submit a 500 word Statement of Purpose that includes the following topics:

  • The theme(s) of your B.G.S. curriculum.
  • A multidisciplinary approach to these issues or topics.
  • Connections between your coursework and co-curricular activities, and post-graduation plans.

Application Deadline

The application for returning students opens on January 1st and closes on June 1st. Applicants will receive notifications in late August.

About David Blumenfeld

David Blumenfeld graduated from the College of Literature, Science, and Arts in 1986 with a Bachelor in General Studies. Mr. Blumenfeld used the freedom of the B.G.S. degree structure to take a wide range of courses including History of Art and Architecture, Philosophy, Psychology, Economics, Statistics, Marketing, and Urban Planning and Design. Mr. Blumenfeld credits the highly interdisciplinary nature of his undergraduate curriculum with preparing him for future success, “Each of these areas of study helped me to better understand some aspect of the real estate and business world.” Through the Blumenfeld Scholarship, Mr. Blumenfeld hopes to empower future generations of B.G.S. students to create thoughtful, interdisciplinary educational plans that will lay the foundation for success in their future careers and lives.

Mr. Blumenfeld currently serves as principal of the Blumenfeld Development Group and president of BDG Construction Corporation. Mr. Blumenfeld is also active in community activities, serving as a Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Children's Medical Fund of New York and as a trustee for the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation, the North Shore LIJ Health System, and the NYC Police Museum.
