Sweetland offers three ways for currently enrolled, U-M Ann Arbor undergraduates to receive writing assistance:

  1. Peer Writing Centers (In-Person and Online one-to-one consultations)
  2. Peer Writing Centers (eTutoring: upload a piece of writing and receive written feedback)
  3. Writing Workshop (In-Person and Online one-to-one consultations)

Peer Writing Centers

SEPTEMBER 18 - DECEMBER 9

• Led by undergrad Peer Writing Consultants
• Any one piece of writing (coursework or other)
• 45-minute in-person or online appointments
• One appointment per day limit

In-Person Appointments: one-to-one consultations at one of the locations listed below
Online Appointments:
 real-time online consultation
eTutoring: upload one piece of writing and receive written feedback (limit: 10 pages)

Online Consultations (Google Meet) - How To

Before your appointment - Link your piece of writing and any prompts in a single Google document. There will be a field for this in the WCOnline Appointment Form. 

During your appointment time:

Please turn on your cameras and microphones for your online appointments. These are intended to mirror our in-person appointments as much as possible, and therefore rely on direct dialogue. We understand that extenuating circumstances may make it impossible to turn on your camera; if that is the case, please inform your consultant and you can have a discussion about possibly rescheduling the appointment.

1. Log in to our online Schedule where you made your appointment.

2. Click on your appointment box at least five minutes prior to the start time.

3. Have your writing project open in another screen on your computer

4.  In the Appointment Window, click the Google Meet link that your consultant shared in your appointment form.

5. Click "join meeting" 

6. Should you have difficulty connecting via video you can use email or Google Chat to contact your consultant

Writing Workshop

• 30-minute in-person or online appointments
• One appointment per week limit

 

Online Consultations - How To

1. Log in to our online schedule where you made your appointment.

2. Click on your appointment box at least five minutes prior to the start time.

3. In the Appointment Window, click the Start or Join Online Consultation link.

4. In the new popup window, click Connect then click Start Publishing.

5. In the bottom right corner click Start Video Chat.

6. An Adobe Flash Player dialog box will ask you for Camera and Microphone access. Choose Allow.

Note: We recommend wearing headphones during the session to prevent audio feedback.

Please turn on your camera and microphone for your online Writing Workshop appointments. These are intended to mirror our in-person appointments as much as possible, and therefore rely on direct dialogue. 7. Should you have difficulty connecting via video you can use the Text Chat Box in the lower right hand corner to communicate with your Consultant.

8. The Consultant will guide you through uploading your paper. If you are early, you can read the information posted on the Whiteboard (main text area) about how the interface works.

Citation Management

The U-M Library offers a variety of tools and services for citation management, including software, help guides, and consultations. If you need citation support, please utlize these services instead of Sweetland Center for Writings writing support services.

Résumé and Application Material Support for LSA Students

Looking for résumé help? The LSA Opportunity Hub, the college’s career exploration center, offers different kinds of support when it comes to building résumés and application materials. Choose the kind of support best suited to your needs:

1. In-depth 1:1 coaching support is available both virtually and in-person through a scheduled appointment or drop-in sessions. Whether you’re starting from scratch or just need a second look, a Hub coach will partner with you on preparing a résumé. Book a Hub Coaching Appointment 

2. Online résumé tools are available on the Hub’s Canvas site. They are packed full of easy-to-use résumé templates, best practices, and quick tips for both building a master résumé template but also tailoring your résumé to prospective internships and job opportunities through step-by-step instructions. Go to Résumé Resources on Canvas
