Coaching

When you meet with a coach, you are making the powerful decision to engage in a thought-provoking, co-creative process that will allow you to reflect, discover, explore, and build a plan for how to develop your professional identity and reach your life’s professional goals and aspirations.

However you interact—whether through a shorter drop-in session, a more in-depth scheduled coaching appointment, or a small group workshop with your peers—coaches help you design a strategy that bridges the gap between where you are now and where you ultimately want to be professionally. The Hub’s coaching services serve LSA students exclusively.

Some of the topics you might want to explore with a coach include:

  • Identifying some of your strengths
  • Figuring out your career interests
  • LinkedIn
  • Résumé, cover letter, personal statement
  • Internship preparation and search
  • Funding options for internships
  • Interview preparation
  • Graduate and professional school
  • Volunteer, research, and other hands-on experience
  • Building relationships with LSA Alums
  • Learning about campus resources
  • And more…

There are a couple of ways in which you can meet individually with a coach:

Drop-in Coaching

Drop-in Virtual Coaching

Drop-in coaching is a great opportunity to make meaningful progress toward your professional goals within  a shorter period of time. It’s a great option, especially if you are a little pressed for time and are looking for support in real-time. For example, if you have a grad school, internship, or job application due in a week, drop-in coaching is ideal for situations like these.

Drop-in coaching sessions are 25 minutes, and are offered on Mondays from 9:00-11:45 a.m. and Thursdays from 2:00-4:45 p.m. No scheduled appointment is necessary—you may meet with a different coach each time (don’t fret, they’re all great!). To allow for a safe yet  productive coaching session, all Hub drop-in coaching will happen virtually for the Fall 2020 semester.

How it Works:

Step 1 — Before meeting, determine what you want to talk about with a coach. It can be as broad as, “I want to learn more about the internship search process”, or as specific as, “I’d like some help crafting a cover letter for an internship at JOURNi.

Step 2 — Gather any materials you think might be useful for your session. Eager to work on your resumé? Have a digital copy of your resumé handy if you have an existing copy. Don’t have one created? That’s fine too. You can work together with  your coach to start building one.

Step 3 — Meet with a Hub coach! You are the expert of your experience, so expect coaches to ask meaningful questions that allow your expertise to shine, and to make for a co-creative session.

Please click here to access our drop-in coaching services. Once you’ve opted to “Join Meeting," a member of our Information Services team will ask you a few questions and will connect you directly to a coach to begin your session!

Scheduled Appointments

Scheduled Virtual Coaching

Scheduled coaching appointments allow both you and your coach to delve deeper into the topic(s) you’ve prioritized for that session. The goal here is the same as it is for drop-in coaching: identify action steps and make progress toward your professional aspirations.

Scheduled coaching sessions are 45 minutes, and are offered Monday-Friday throughout the day with some early evening availability. You can request a specific coach if you desire, but that is subject to their availability. To allow for a safe yet productive coaching session, all scheduled appointments will happen virtually for the Fall 2020 semester. You can book a virtual one-on-one coaching appointment by:

  • Sending an email to lsa-opphub@umich.edu,
  • Calling us at 734-763-4674 OR
  • Stopping by the office Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

A member of our team will follow up about scheduling a phone or video coaching appointment. Unfortunately, we cannot schedule same-day appointments; all appointments are scheduled at least 24 hours in advance so that your coach can prepare for your session.

How it Works:
