Howard Kimeldorf retired from the University in 2016.
Professor Kimeldorf is generally interested in the relationship between patterned inequality and social change. Much of his research has focused on inequalities rooted in class, with the goal of examining how historical processes of working class formation have shaped the possibilities for collective action and protest in the twentieth century United States. His books on this topic have investigated the sources of radical and conservative political cultures in the American longshore industry, and the role of syndicalist practices in shaping the national labor movement. His current research includes a collaborative project that examines the extent and character of ethical consumption among contemporary consumers, particularly in their desire to avoid products that are produced by "sweated" labor.
