We are proud to host the Midwest Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics in January 2024. You are helping make this possible for 200 students from across the Midwest.

Please join the U-M Department of Physics on Giving Tuesday, - 11/28/23 - to help students attend the Midwest Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics! The U-M Physics Department is hosting a 4-day conference for 200 undergraduate women physics students this January.

Our goal is to cover all registration fees and travel expenses for the 200 undergraduate students from across the Great Lakes region attending the Midwest Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics in January 2024. This empowering academic conference provides women with the opportunity to meet with female physicists, foster their ambitions, and provide education around career paths in physics and adjacent fields, and it serves as an exciting recruitment opportunity for Michigan Physics.

On average, conference attendance will cost $195 per student. Funds raised on Giving Tuesday will directly provide financial relief for students attending the conference, including a $45 registration fee and travel expenses.

  • $2,000 will cover parking expenses for students driving to campus
  • $8,000 will cover the flight costs for the 20 students purchasing airfare
  • $4,000 will cover the average expenses for 20 students
  • $9,000 will cover the $45 registration fee for all 200 students
  • $20,000 will cover the lodging expenses for all students

CUWiP was founded in 2006 to foster a more inclusive environment for undergraduate women in physics by allowing them to experience a professional conference and introduce them to the possibilities for women and gender minorities in physics at all career levels. CUWiP is organized by the American Physical Society and concurrently hosts nearly 2,000 undergraduate physics students at 14 locations across the US. The University of Michigan will host 200 students from across the Midwest/Great Lakes region from January 19-21, 2024.

As a local organizing committee, we aim to provide an empowering experience by bringing in high-achieving speakers from various backgrounds, designing and hosting meaningful workshops and small-group discussions, hosting social and networking events, and more.

Your gift reflects your support for our shared values at Michigan Physics: expanding the frontiers of scientific exploration, recruiting and supporting world-class faculty, providing life-changing research opportunities, advancing a curriculum built for 21st-century careers, and actively engaging the public.

We strive to support our students and faculty on the front lines of learning and research and to steward our planet, community, and campus. To do this, Physics needs your support!

A gift of any amount will help women in physics from across the Great Lakes region. It takes all of us.

Help us reach 40 donors this Giving Tuesday and a loyal LSA donor will contribute an additional $4,000!
