Adam C. Simon serves as the director for Michigan Research and Discovery Scholars. Adam earned his BS from the University of Maryland, his MS from Stony Brook University, his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at The Johns Hopkins University before joining the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2005 as an assistant professor. Adam transitioned to the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan in 2012 and is also on the faculty of the undergraduate Program in the Environment (PitE). His research and teaching focus on energy and mineral resources, with an emphasis on the geochemistry of energy critical metals. Adam has been recognized for his innovative pedagogical approaches to undergraduate teaching via the University of Michigan Provost's Teaching Innovation Prize, and he was named an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in 2019. He has been married to his life partner for 25 years, is the father of four children (two girls and two boys), two shih tzu's and a cat. He loves reading, listening to podcasts about almost everything, is an avid walker, and practices yoga and meditation daily.
