Student Recruitment

Our mission is to increase access and advance student diversity by recruiting high achieving, motivated first-year and transfer students to one of the nation’s preeminent public liberal arts college.

We target select prospective first-year and transfer students to encourage them to apply, and admitted students to provide them with the information they need to make their enrollment decision.  We work closely with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Office of Financial Aid, LSA Advancement, LSA Academic Advising, the Honors Program, Residential College and the Michigan Learning Communities, Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, Office of New Student Programs, Center for Educational Outreach, and select non-profit educational programs to leverage resources and meet our mutual recruitment goals.

Current Programs

The Student Recruitment office hosts programs and collaborates with other units to enhance prospective and new students’ LSA experience. Here are a few examples:

Summer Programs
We encourage high school students to participate in U-M summer programs to gain exposure to the university, Ann Arbor, and different fields of study. In particular, we partner with the Michigan Math & Science Scholars program, Earth CampTelluride Association Sophomore Seminars.

Transfer Bridges to the Humanities (TB2H)

A collaborative partnership between LSA and Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Transfer Bridges aims to make LSA more accessible to community college transfer students planning to study the humanities. This program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, includes tailored recruitment and advising, paid fellowship opportunities, and academic capacity-building for graduation and beyond. The most successful elements of the program will be expanded to other Michigan community colleges in the future.

Campus Day

All U-M admitted first-year students are invited to attend this one-day program with their parents to learn more about the University and help them to decide if U-M is where they would like to attend college. The program is offered over 20 times, January through April. LSA admits attend a multimedia presentation to learn more about LSA, followed by opportunities to visit Honors, Residential College, the Michigan Learning Communities, LSA Opportunity Hub, Science Learning Center, Language Resource Center, Comprehensive Studies Program, or observe a class.

Transfer Webinars
We host webinars for admitted transfer students to provide additional information and answer questions prior to Transfer Orientation.

Advising Call-In
Admitted first-year students may call in on Wednesday nights in April to speak with an LSA academic advisor prior to making their enrollment decision on May 1.

LSA Undergraduate Laptop Program
To help bridge the digital divide and improve recruitment and retention, select admitted students with financial need are loaned a new laptop to use during their undergraduate career.
