Peer Advisor Application

Position Description

The Peer Advisor is a student staff position focused on providing peer-to-peer support for the Undergraduate Program in Biology and the Undergraduate Program in Neuroscience community. In their role, Peer Advisors have the opportunity to gain advising and event planning experiences by facilitating advising appointments with current and prospective students and planning, leading, and conceptualizing events for students throughout the academic year. Openings for the 2024-2025 academic year are listed below. Peer Advisors hired for the 2024-2025 year may be asked to begin training during the Winter 2024 term and may have the opportunity to support commencement ceremonies.

Appointment & Time Commitment

Peer Advisors can expect to work up to 10 hours per week, including two 3-hour blocks of advising time per week in the office. Additional hours may be allocated to leading information sessions and staffing events, some of which may take place in the evenings. Peer Advisors are paid hourly at a rate of $15/hour. Preference will be given to candidates who indicate they can commit to the position for both Fall and Winter terms; Spring and Summer schedules can be determined in consultation with supervisors. 

Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly meetings with advising and/or event staff
  • Serve as a resource for students, prospective students/families, and office guests
  • Regularly facilitate and/or support information sessions, panels, and events focused on advising, well-being, professional development, and networking
  • Assist with and attend large-scale annual events (e.g., commencement, Major/Minor Expo, and Honors Poster Session); example assistance includes greeting guests, taking attendance, event setup and breakdown, and facilitation
  • Assist with the marketing of programs and events through flyer design and distribution, in-person communication, and electronic correspondence

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be an undergraduate student with Junior or Senior status in a major listed below. Up to one Peer Advisor per major is on staff at any given time
    • BHS
    • Biology
    • EEB
    • MCDB
    • Microbiology
    • Neuroscience
  • Must be in good academic and social standing
  • Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws
  • Must uphold all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide and any other applicable University policies and procedures
  • Must attend all relevant staff meetings (schedule TBD based upon peer advisor availability)Must attend and participate in all required onboarding, training, and preparation based on start date
  • Must adhere to all roles, responsibilities, and expectations for the entire duration of the appointment
  • Must maintain clear and professional communication with staff regarding these roles, responsibilities, and expectations.
