2024 UMBS Research Technician (Temporary)

Job Summary:

The University of Michigan Biological Station in Pellston, Michigan, seeks a paid research technician for the summer 2024 field season. Technicians will contribute to research at UMBS aimed at advancing our understanding of carbon cycling in forest ecosystems, as well as the impacts of climate variability and change on northern forests and lakes. Summer residence at the UMBS field station in Pellston, Michigan is required, and onsite housing and meals will be provided. Research duties will include collection of field data related to forest phenology (e.g., leaf area index, litter trap collection, tree growth data), data processing of previously collected field samples, and/or participation in meteorological fieldwork on Douglas Lake or Lake Superior.

Required Qualifications:

Working toward a bachelor’s degree in ecology, forestry, meteorology, physics, hydrology, environmental science, or other related field. The capacity to live on site at UMBS in Pellston, Michigan is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Team-oriented field research experience. A means of transportation or the ability to hike / bike to field sites if other transportation is unavailable. Familiarity with basic forest ecology, instrumentation, and/or environmental dataloggers. Good communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative research environment. Prior experience in scientific research.

Wages:

Starting at $15/hour, 40 hours per week
