Transfer Credit

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures does allow courses transferred from other institutions to be used to help meet prerequisite and course requirements for our major and two minors. Be aware, however, that the major and the two minors have a minimum number of credits that have to be completed "in residence" (refers to courses taken at UM or through an overseas program associated with the university that are approved for in-residence credit [information about such programs can be found at https://internationalcenter.umich.edu/abroad/swt/study]). The minimum in residence credits required for the major and the two minors are as follows:

  • Asian Studies major: a minimum of 15 credits have to be completed in residence.
  • Asian Languages and Cultures minor (a.k.a., Asian Languages Minor): a minimum of 6 credits have to be completed in residence.
  • Asian Studies minor: a minimum of 12 credits have to be completed in residence.

All courses for the departmental major or the two minors must be approved by a departmental advisor. All courses used toward the major or the minors have to have a letter grade, any Pass/Fail courses have to be uncovered by the Office of the Registrar.

Evaluation Process

Currently Enrolled UM Student

Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the particular class has been approved for transfer.

  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (e.g. HISTORY 261) then no additional steps are required.
  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (e.g., HISTORY 101X; History Dept.) make an appointment with a departmental advisor to have the course evaluated.
  • If the class is not listed on the TCE website, submit an evaluation request using the UM Transfer Credit Equivalency Request Form. If you are informed that a class transfers as departmental credit, make an appointment with a department advisor to have the course evaluated.

Prospective Transfer Student

Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved for transfer.

  • If a class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (e.g. HISTORY 261) then no additional steps are required.
  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (e.g. HISTORY 101X; History Dept.) make an appointment with a departmental advisor to have the course evaluated.
  • If a class is not listed at all on the TCE this means that no student has ever submitted it for evaluation.
    • Submit the course to the departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies for evaluation at alc-advising@umich.edu
