For forty-one years, Facilities Manager Tony Sutterley has been the engine making the University of Michigan Biological Station go. On October 31st, he hung up his camp keys and embarked on his next adventure—retirement!

In departing from his beloved “Bug Camp,” Tony asked that we pass on this note of appreciation for all those who joined him on his journey from nineteen-year-old on the work crew, to seasoned veteran and go-to-guy. A special thanks to all who celebrated with him and his family at his retirement party in August. From the man himself:

Tony - an avid U-M and Yankees fan - took advantage of his retirement party to share a cap with UMBS intern and Red Sox supporter, Suzie Kaufman.

“It's hard for us to believe that over forty years ago we moved to the Biological Station.  The friends that we have made and the memories will last us a lifetime.  Our family had the opportunity to live at UMBS year-round. Most of you only know the Station in the summer, which is great, especially if you were a kid! But, to get to live on the shores of Douglas Lake in the in the fall, winter and spring was a chance to know The Bug Camp at its finest.

The trees along Grapevine Point in October, the ice-covered lake on a -20 morning in February, and the morels and trilliums arriving in the spring are things we will never forget.

The Station was more than a job or a place to live, it was our home and always will be.

It seems it is never really good-bye at the Station, it's see you later, and we hope we will.

Thank you for making us a part of the UMBS Family,

The Sutterleys”

See you later, Tony!
