PELLSTON — The University of Michigan Biological Station’s square-dancing tradition continues.

On Saturday, June 17, dozens of students, scientists, staff and families at the remote scientific field station in northern Michigan danced the night away along Douglas Lake.

Local Caller Cynthia Donahey taught camp all of the moves — from do-si-do to swing your partner and promenade — and directed dancers through each song.

A local band, which is a hybrid of the bands Peacemeal and Harbor HoeDown, played the music, with John Richey and Maureen Scott on fiddles, Dale Scott playing guitar and harmonica and Ron Fowler strumming a five-string banjo.

The band played a selection of high-energy, old-time fiddle tunes with some Irish reels and hornpipes and a couple of waltzes.

Watch one of the dances on the UMBS YouTube channel and share in the joy, music and laughter.
