Statistics Ph.D. Student Council

The Statistics Ph.D. Student Council is a student-led organization in the Department of Statistics at the University of Michigan. The Council aims to improve the Ph.D. student experience, foster involvement of Ph.D. students in the department, provide opportunities for Ph.D. students to take ownership over their experience in the department, and promote an inclusive community.

The Council also acts as an interface between the Ph.D. students and department leadership and provides a student perspective on many department matters. For example, during faculty hiring the Council works with Ph.D. students to collect and deliver feedback on faculty candidates.

The Council consists of a small number of volunteer students who are responsible for the overall organization. Most of the Council’s work is carried out by committees whose membership includes a mix of Council members and other students in the department. The current list of Council members and committees can be found on the Council’s wiki page (UMich login required).  You can contact the current members of the council via email at stat-phd-council@umich.edu.

Statistics PhD Student Wiki

The Student Council runs a department wiki for Stats Ph.D. students (UMich login required). The wiki is a source of information for current and new students on computing resources, statistics conferences, course suggestions, guides to moving to Ann Arbor, and other information of particular interest to Ph.D. students. The wiki is also open to all department faculty, postdocs, and staff,  and everyone is encouraged to edit the wiki to improve and add new content. Don’t be shy about editing; all edit history is stored and thus any changes can easily be reversed if necessary. The wiki also has more detailed information about the organization and activities of the Student Council.
