Remembering Michael Woodroofe
Michael Woodroofe, Leonard J. Savage Professor Emeritus of Statistics at the University of Michigan, passed away on February 22, 2022, at the age of 81. Michael made many fundamental contributions at the interface between probablity and statistics, including sequential analysis and non-linear renewal theory, shape-restricted inference, and central limit theorems under dependence. He was one of the founders of the Michigan Department of Statistics in 1969 and the last solo editor of the Annals of Statistics. Michael was not only an exceptional statistician but also a great mentor who supervised over 40 PhD students, and a wonderful human being who touched many lives directly and indirectly. He is survived by his wife Fran and their three children. Michael Woodroofe leaves behind a great legacy and will be sorely missed. Michael Woodroofe's formal obituary.
We strive to support our students and faculty on the front lines of learning and research and to steward our planet, our community, our campus. To do this, the Department of Statistics needs your support.
