Overview and Introduction
Please note: The Mitchell Scholarship cycle has been paused for 2024-25. As a result, U-M will be cancelling its campus application process.
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program honors former US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process.
Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one academic year of graduate study in any discipline offered by nine institutions of higher learning in the Republic of Ireland.
The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides university tuition, accommodation/housing, a stipend for living expenses and travel, as well as chances for additional scholarship opportunities at your chosen institution.
Eligibility:
- Citizenship: A citizen of the United States.
- Age: At least 18 but not yet 30 years of age. (see website for details)
- Degree: Completion of a bachelor’s degree before October 1st.
Application Deadlines
- U-M Deadline: August 19th, 2024 at 12:00pm
- National Deadline: Late September/Early October

Mitchell Selection Criteria:
The Mitchell Scholarship does not set a minimum GPA, but successful applicants for U-M nomination will typically have a 3.5 or higher GPA with the average probably around 3.7 GPA. The foundation gives equal weight to its three selection criteria:
- Academic excellence
- Demonstrated leadership potential
- Commitment to public service
Instructions for Prospective Applicants
Prospective applicants should join the UK Scholarships Canvas site for an overview of the application, program requirements, additional advising information, and more. All U-M applicants must register with ONSF via the Canvas site in order to be eligible to apply for U-M nomination to the Mitchell Scholarship.
Application Summary
- Four letters of recommendation from faculty or work/internship/research supervisors
- A personal statement (1000 word limit)
- Proposed Academic Program (350 words)
- Two-page resume of major academic and co-curricular activities.
- Unofficial U-M transcript
- U-M class ranking
Top candidates for U-M endorsement will be invited to interview with the Rhodes and Marshall Nomination Committee in early September. Candidates selected for endorsement will work with ONSF to complete the final application before the October 1st national deadline.
