This session is exclusively dedicated to LSA Staff and Faculty
What you’ll learn:
This self-defense workshop takes a holistic approach to self-defense, emphasizing awareness and assertiveness skills as well as physical and verbal strategies to counter violence from the ground. This particular workshop will solely focus on ground defenses or ground fighting. The student will practice how to properly fall to avoid injury if knocked to the ground.
Please note: Learning these techniques requires close physical contact with partners. Participants are expected to practice the ground skills with no barriers between them and their partners. This course requires participation and is not open to those who only wish to watch/observe the techniques.
Who this class is for:
This is not a martial arts course and all LSA Staff and Faculty are welcome to attend, no matter your fitness level or experience with self-defense skills.
What to bring and wear:
Attendees should wear comfortable workout clothing and gym shoes.
We recommend bringing a water bottle. Water to fill up your bottle will be available at the session.
Trainers: Candace Dorsey, Empowerment Self-Defense Program Manager, & Gary Hicks, Police Sergeant, U-M Division of Public Safety and Security
Sponsor: The LSA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Culture Office
Please note: This session has a capacity of 18 participants and requires a minimum of 12 participants to be held. If fewer than 12 people have registered the day before the session is scheduled to occur, the session will be cancelled. We will send notice of cancellation 24 hours in advance and let you know when another session on the same topic has been scheduled.
If you have any questions or will require any accommodations to attend, please contact Jessica McCuaig (jmccuaig@umich.edu) at least one week in advance of the session.
