The UMMAA is pleased to present Erina Baci, PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology, University of Michigan, who will speak on Friday, November 19, 12-1 p.m., as part of the online UMMAA Brown Bag Lecture Series.
Baci will draw on survey data from the RAPID-K project as well as surface collections from her own pilot research to explore the role hillforts play in influencing the movement of people and land use in Western Kosova. Baci conducted surface collections at three hillforts in Western Kosova; Krye, Gradine, and Gjyteti. Magnetometry survey was also conducted at the last two. While varying in size, elevation and underlying geology, these three sites share a common characteristic; they are strategically located along the southern slopes of the Accursed Mountains, overlooking the plains of Dukagjin. This placement allows for wide viewsheds of their surroundings, which encompass key flat settlements below. The GIS, magnetometry and surface collection results present three very different profiles, suggesting that the sites filled different roles in the prehistoric landscape.
