Transient People

In this episode, Cozine traces the influence of his upbringing on his identity and shares his love of learning. Part of his learning growth on the outside is in self definition: though he shares with us music, poetry, and modern physics, he doesn’t yet know who he is--or which friends are around to stay. Cozine talks about the difficulty of these transient people, and tells stories of his rocky relationship with his father.

Bio

At the age of 17 Cozine was sentenced to a 22-40 year prison sentence in the Michigan Department of Corrections. While incarcerated, he became the most published writer in the ten year history of the Michigan Review of Prisoner Creative Writing, having appeared in 9 consecutive volumes. Since being released last September he has been published in the Michigan Quarterly Review, Plough Quarterly, the Periphery and other journals. Currently co-teaching the Atonement Project at the University of Michigan, a course that focuses on restorative justice, reconciliation and atonement, Cozine also serves as the new Managing Editor of the Michigan Review of Prisoner Creative Writing. A lyric poet and performer of slam and performance poetry, he is also an accomplished amateur guitarist and singer/songwriter. Originally from Detroit, he resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan and is a student at Washtenaw Community College.
