"I see fireflies, and that is joy to me." – Martín
While We Were Away was inspired by Kathryn Condon, a former UM student and Michigan Radio staff who was interested in combining her passions for PCAP and audio storytelling. The project began in summer 2018 in consultation with PCAP’s Mary Heinen and students Hannah French and Stina Perkins. It was intended to not only provide a forum for the voices and stories of our participants, all of whom were formerly incarcerated, but also to offer advice and knowledge for those who remain inside.
Each episode told the stories of a different participant, guided minimally by the voices of the podcast hosts. This podcast was by no means a comprehensive tool, but rather paints a portrait of what life could look like on the outside, focusing on joys despite struggle, and offering words of wisdom for the future.
The firefly in the logo was inspired by storyteller Martín, whose vision of beauty and joy post-incarceration served as a reminder of hope.
