Udall Scholarship

Overview and Introduction

Honoring the legacy of U.S. Representative Morris Udall and Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, the Udall Foundation awards $7,000 scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native Indian nations or to the environment.  

Udall Scholars attend a 4-day orientation in Tucson, Arizona, and gain access to the Udall Alumni Network, an association of environmental and tribal leaders sharing innovative ideas, professional advice, and job and internship opportunities.

Undergraduates apply in one of three areas: environment, tribal policy, and native health care.

Campus Application Deadline: March 2nd, 2024 at 11:59pm ET

Eligibility:

  • Degree-Level: Sophomore or junior standing with full-time enrollment
  • Academics: No requirement, but at least a 3.7 GPA recommended
  • Citizenship: US citizenship required, and applicants for Tribal Policy or Healthcare must be of Native heritage (more info on Udall website)

Selection Criteria:

  • Working towards positive solutions to environmental challenges or issues impacting Native Americans
  • Demonstrated commitment to one of those areas through public service
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to take action
  • Commitment to making a difference through civility, integrity, consensus, nonpartisanship and public service

  • U-M Deadline: March 2nd, 2024 at 11:59pm ET
  • National Deadline: Mid-March
  • Endorsement: U-M Nomination is Required

Instructions for Prospective Applicants 

Prospective applicants should join the U-M Nominated Scholarships Canvas site for an overview of the application, program requirements, additional advising information, and more.  

Note: Nominees must fall into one of two groups; those who intent to pursue careers in environmental public policy; or Native American and Alaska Native students who intend to pursue careers in health care or tribal public policy.

Application Components 

  1. Three letters of recommendation
  2. U-M Transcript
  3. Filled out PDF of the Udall Application (See U-M Nominated Scholarships Canvas for detail)

Eligibility:

  • Academics: Most successful applicants have at least a 3.7 GPA. 
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship 
  • Degree-Level: Sophomore or junior standing with full-time enrollment. 
  • Other: Applicants for tribal policy or healthcare must be of Native heritage (see Udall website for details). 

Application Deadlines

  • Campus Deadline: March 1st by 12:00 noon EDT
  • Endorsement:  The Udall Scholarship does not allow direct applications. Students must be nominated by the U-M Udall Committee.
