Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics Presents: "Conversations on Inclusion and Equity"
Dr. Mika Tosca, Assistant Professor, Climate Science, School of the Art Institute of Chicago
“Transcending science: Can art prevent a climate apocalypse?
(or: Being a transgender climate scientist at an art university in the Age of Trump)”
The climate crisis is more desperate than ever—ice caps are melting, disease is spreading, heat waves are multiplying, storms are strengthening—and politicians continue to ignore the warning signs. In 2017 my career took a turn when I left NASA to teach climate science at an art institution. In this talk I will detail ways my experience as a transgender scientist at a non-traditional institution have helped my scholarship bridge the divide between scientists, artists, and the public.
