Hometown: Clarkston, MI

Major: Political Science

Internship Placement: Rep. Slotkin

Why did you decide to do Michigan in Washington?

I decided to do Michigan in Washington because I have always wanted to work and live in DC. I have worked in politics for years and thought Michigan In Washington would be a natural next step. In my initial college essay, I wrote about how the MIW program drew me to Michigan. In addition, I know many people who have done MIW and enjoyed it. My friend and mentor, Andrew Schaeffler, pushed me to apply. I want to move to Washington after graduation, and I thought this would be a significant step to ensure I can do that.

What do you do during a typical day at your internship?

Every day is different at Rep. Slotkin's office. I attend committee hearings, attend legislative briefings, answer phones, perform general office tasks, help with comms, lead capitol tours, and more.

What's something that you're proud of that you've done at your internship so far?

I enjoy taking notes at committee hearings and sending them to the Congresswoman. I have learned so much at committee hearings and meetings with interest groups. It really has been a great experience.

How has your skillset evolved or changed since you began working on this internship?

I have learned so much about how the Hill operates. As someone who has always enjoyed politics, I thought I knew a lot. However, being on the ground at the Hill has taught me so many things. This experience has also helped me become a better writer, as we need to send concise and brief notes to the Congresswoman. This is a crucial skill for the workplace, as people want information summarized and to the point.

What is one fun activity that you have done since being in DC?

I enjoy going out to the restaurants/bars in DC. There is such an active social scene here, and it's so cool to meet people from many different career paths. I also really enjoy just taking walks around the city. I love how you can get everywhere without a car. The public transit is fantastic and should be a model for all cities. DC is a world-class city, and there is so much to do.

What advice would you give to a student interested in Michigan in Washington?

Apply! One thing I believe about college is that it is way more than just attending classes. The University of Michigan has so many great resources; people should take advantage of them. The ability to intern while you're at school is amazing and sets you up nicely to secure another internship in the summer as well.
