In accordance with a change in the University of Michigan's face covering policy, masks are now optional in the Kelsey Museum galleries.
However, in light of U-M's continued mask requirement for classrooms and instructional spaces during class time, the Kelsey will require face coverings for all participants in planned tours and educational activities such as object handling. We thank you for your understanding.
The Kelsey Museum is a distinctive and significant resource for the University of Michigan community and fellow colleges and universities in the region. In addition to the permanent and special exhibitions, we offer a wide range of programs developed as resources for university audiences. All programs listed below can be specifically tailored to meet course requirements. For more details, please contact the Education Department by emailing email@example.com or calling (734) 647-4167.
This is our most popular resource for university classes. Tours are led by our knowledgeable docents and staff members and are tailored to the specifics of your course. Visit the University Tours page for details.
Experiential Learning Activities
Activity components are opportunities for students to engage more deeply with the topic of the tour. They are designed to encourage students’ analytic thinking as well as exploring the roles of archaeologists and museums in our understanding of past cultures. Visit the Experiential Learning Activities page for details.
Please note: A minimum of 6 weeks advance notice is needed.
Classroom Outreach (currently available only virtually)
If a visit to the museum is not an option, the Kelsey Museum is also able to bring the tour to your classroom. A member of our education staff can visit your classroom and deliver an engaging presentation on the Kelsey and its collections.
We would also be excited to work with you in developing course curriculum that incorporates the Kelsey Museum and its collections.
The Kelsey Prize for Excellence in Archaeological Research and Interpretation
The Kelsey Prize is an invitation to all University of Michigan undergraduate students to explore and discover the stories behind the objects at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. A cash prize will be given to the projects that best demonstrate excellence in research and interpretation of the Kelsey's archaeological collections. For more information about the Kelsey Prize and how to enter this year's competition, please visit the Kelsey Prize page.
