<B>High Energy-Astrophysics</B><br><I>TOTEM, a Forward Physics Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider</I>

A brief introduction to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will be given. The talk will focus on a detailed description of the physics and the experimental set-up of the TOTEM experiment, one of the 6 LHC experiments. TOTEM will focus on physics not easily reachable by the general purpose detectors. Its main goal is the measurement of the total pp cross-section in a luminosity independent way using the optical theorem. Furthermore, the elastic pp scattering and also the diffractive scattering with one or two protons remaining intact will be measured over a large kinematical range. These data will not only distinguish between various theoretical models, but will also give some deeper insight into the structure of the proton.
In addition, measurements of very forward particle production will improve the interpretation of highest energy cosmic ray data (like e.g. the ones of Auger) and will support or refute some of the unexpected phenomena observed earlier in cosmic rays.
