Transfer Credit

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan welcomes transfer students into our major and minor degree programs!

The Department of Anthropology allows students to take and transfer courses from other institutions to UM for prerequisite, major credit, and minor credit through the approval process described below. Transfer courses may be applied toward your major, but at least 20 of your total credits for the major must be completed in residence. The only restrictions to transfer credit include the core courses in the anthropological sub-fields, and the 400 level requirement, which typically need to be taken in residence. Some exceptions may apply, in consultation with a departmental advisor. Likewise, the undergraduate advisors welcome the opportunity to evaluate anthropology coursework for prospective students.

Currently Enrolled UM Students

Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved for transfer. On the website, choose the Michigan or Out of State Transfer Credit Equivalency guide.

  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (e.g., ANTHRCUL 101), then no additional steps are required.
  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit, make an appointment with an Anthropology Department advisor to have the course evaluated.
  • If the class is not listed on the TCE website, submit an evaluation request using the U-M Transfer Credit Equivalency Request Form. If you are informed that the class transfers as departmental credit, make an appointment with an Anthropology Department advisor or email anthro.undergrad.program@umich.edu to have the class evaluated.

Prospective Transfer Students

Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved for transfer. On the website, choose the Michigan or Out of State Transfer Credit Equivalency guide.

  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (i.e., Anthropology Department), then no additional steps are required.
  • If a class is not listed at all on the TCE, this means that no student has ever submitted it for evaluation.  You may submit the course for evaluation via email to anthro.undergrad.program@umich.edu.
