Basically, it is a box, and you put components inside it, and you can arrange components within the container(s) to be side-by-side, and adjust their width, and so on.
Depending on how you want content to look on your page, it can get very complicated very quickly. Therefore, we will gloss over it in new user training and encourage you to contact the Help Desk when you want help setting them up. You are encouraged to look at the Pre-Formatted Layouts pages on this site for an idea of how the layout containers could help you lay out your content.
