Major: Honors Sociology
Minor: History
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
Where did you transfer from? Wake Forest University
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I chose to transfer to the University of Michigan because of the myriad of educational and social opportunities available to students.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? I want new transfer students to know that it is okay to not have everything figured out when you arrive on campus. When I first arrived on campus, I felt as if I needed to make friends, join clubs, and do well in my classes…and I wanted to do all of these things simultaneously. It’s hard to not compare yourself to other students and peers who seem to have everything figured out; however, you have to remember that they are in a completely different boat than you as they have been at Michigan for longer. Social, academic, and personal integration at the University will come with time, so give yourself some slack!
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? During my first year on campus, I tried to actively immerse myself in the communities available to me at Michigan. More specifically, I am a part of Greek Life, Kappa Omega Alpha – a pre-law fraternity, and a small cohort of Honors students working on their senior thesis.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? All of the diverse class offerings!
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? Although it is “required” to meet with an advisor, I wish that I took more advantage of the advising services at the University to explore all of the major/minor offerings. While I am happy and satisfied with my major/minor, I wish that I had optimized my schedule space to have a double-major/minor.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I stumbled upon my first Sociology course by accident, enrolling in it as a way to fulfill some of my core requirements. However, little did I know that this introductory class would end up changing the course of my academic journey. From the very first lecture, I found myself captivated by the subject matter, and my interest only grew with each passing week. Over the course of the semester, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Sociology was not just about abstract theories and hypothetical principles, but rather a way to connect the information in the world that had previously seemed unrelated to me. At the beginning of my academic journey, I found that the Sociology curriculum had an alluring and pervasive quality that extended beyond the confines of the classroom, permeating my daily life and providing me with a new lens through which to view the world. Sociology has taught me to think critically about the world, and to look beyond the surface level of things in order to gain a deeper understanding of the social forces that shape our lives.
