Where did you transfer from? University of Maryland, College Park
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? Since high school, I have always wanted to go to the University of Michigan. However, amidst the pandemic, I decided to attend college that was a bit closer to home. While my initial college experience was positive, I found myself wanting to aim higher and seize greater opportunities that would better prepare me for my career goals. Ultimately, I chose to transfer to the University of Michigan since I knew that there were incredible pre-health resources, abundant research opportunities, and an academic curriculum that would challenge me to use my full potential. With these considerations in mind, I embarked on my transfer journey. Looking back, I can confidently say that my experience at U-M has exceeded my expectations. U-M has not only allowed me to achieve my goals, but has also provided an environment where I can truly thrive as both a student and an individual.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? The biggest piece of advice I could give new transfer students is to embrace the countless opportunities that U-M has to offer. It can seem intimidating to transfer to a completely new campus, but the beauty of having such a large, diverse campus community is that there is undoubtedly a place for everyone. Whatever your passions or goals are, there are certainly communities and resources here that are tailored to help you succeed and flourish. U-M is a dynamic, ever-evolving environment, so don’t be afraid to take advantage of any opportunities that seem interesting to you. Explore broadly, and you’ll find many different avenues to make the most of your college experience.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? Since I am an introvert, I made an effort to put myself out there! I joined clubs, study groups, and research teams that have all allowed me to meet amazing people who have truly shaped my college experience. U-M also provides many social events where you can meet new people, such as aMplify nights, UMix, LSA@Play, and more!
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite aspect of being an LSA transfer student is the sense of belonging and support within the community of fellow transfer students. It is reassuring to connect with peers who have shared similar experiences during the transfer journey. However, despite our common identities as transfer students, we each bring a unique set of experiences, perspectives, and interests to the table—creating a diverse and vibrant community!
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? I wish I would have known how important it is to interact with professors and instructors! U-M is well-known for its rigorous academics, but reaching out to your professors, GSIs, and study group facilitators can make a world of a difference in understanding the material you’re learning. The faculty here are genuinely invested in your success and are happy to help you.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I chose to major in Biomolecular Sciences because it has not only prepared me for a career in healthcare, but it also provides the flexibility to pursue extracurriculars, research, and even classes in other fields that seem interesting to me.
